Praying through the night: Do we heed the call for the divine appointment?
I learned long ago that when I wake in the middle of the night, even if it is to go down the hall, there is a reason why it happened at that specific time. Adonai (God) wakes us to spend time with us and so we can pray.
For well over a decade, the waking throughout the night has been caused in part by hormones, I realize. Nonetheless, it is still a call to prayer and drawing near.
No matter the reason we wake, it is perfect time to draw near to the Lord and to pray.
The question is: Do we heed the call?
And if we do, do we fall asleep during the prayer watch we were assigned?
Sometimes, I think it's for a quick arrow prayer or popcorn prayer, short and simple.
Other times, I think God wants us to bring immediate, powerful prayer for an extended period of time. It's like much is riding on it, even if we have no clue what it is specifically.
Waking in the middle of the night is always a divine appointment.
Do we wake, roll over, check the clock and go back to sleep? Or do we add at least a quick prayer in there?
When we are awoken, no matter the reason, do we ask Him why He has woken us and what we can pray?
Do we fall asleep when He has called us and woken us to pray?
A friend of mine has dubbed these times He calls us to duty, us of the Prayer Guard, the watchman and gatekeepers.
Do we take it seriously enough when we are woken to pray?
Do we want to go back to sleep? Of course we do. It's the middle of the night and we are horizontal for a reason. We need our rest.
However, we can instead, say another arrow prayer: Lord, when the morning comes, let me feel refreshed and as though I got eight hours of deep, refreshing sleep.
That prayer shows that we trust God will provide for us, and it shows our commitment to doing what the Lord wants of us.
The fact of the matter is, if we are believers, and trust in Yeshua/Jesus, we are all called to pray and be prayer warriors.
So, let's take seriously to the middle of the night call to duty to draw near to God, to pray, and do our best to not go back to sleep until He gives us peace to do so.
